A Jungle Island Amid a Sea of Palm Oil Plantations?

(Photo credit:  The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).)

Look at this sad photo. It shows a solitary strip of jungle island surrounded by a sea of what looks like palm oil plantation land. Maybe it’s not, but, still, what sliver of habitat is that for the majestic Sumatran orangutan? More tellingly, look what it says about Indonesia’s plan to rape its own precious natural resources for a monoculture economy: palm oil all the time.

It truly feels like we’re just holding-back the inevitable. I feel hopeless.
