No, Mr. American Christian Taliban, This Country Never Has Been A Christian Nation

When it comes to the separation of church and state, Mr. American Christian Taliban, hold your “throwing up” (his words not mine) because the US never has been a Christian nation.  In fact, the Treaty of Tripoli, ratified by the Senate and signed by President John Adams in 1797 (ending the hostilities with the Muslim Barbary Pirates) states the following (among other things):

” As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion….”

I fact-checked this with one of my old U.S. History teachers at UCLA, now an esteemed professor emeritus, who reiterated, “The treaty language, of course, emphasized our lack of an official religion as a diplomatic gesture towards the Tripolitan Muslims….[but]I don’t think that there is any doubt that the country was not founded on Christianity, but was conceived as a secular state.  The Constitution itself demonstrates that.”
